SHORT HISTORY ON DARFUR G.EnOCIDE
The Darfur g.enocide was the first genocide of the 21st century as it started in 2003 along with the war in Darfur.
The region of Darfur is Located in the country of Sudan πΈπ© which is the largest country in Africa. Since it’s independence in 1956, civil wars between the north and south has ravaged the country killing displacing and creating millions of refugees.
Darfur, which is the western region of Sudan has a totally different conflict to the rest of the country and had its own problems away from the north and south civil war.
In the area of Darfur the farmers viewed themselves as Africans while the herders viewed themselves as Arabs.These minor differences had caused clashes over the Darfur land for decades.
As tensions started to boil rebel groups of the African farmers started to form in order to fight against the Sudanese government which was accused of only supporting the Arab herders, the Sudanese government would respond by organising and backing the “Janjaweed” Arab militias to k.ill civilians of the different tribes and fight the rebels.
Entire villages were burned and a devastating number of innocent people were m.urdered, beaten,r.aped and m.utilated.
The g.enocide is believed to have killed around 500,000 and displaced a further 3 million (1/3) people from the Darfur region.
